In Last Breath, the rain brought a new and dire threat to Morganville and its vampires... their ancient enemies, the draug. Now, the vampires are fighting a losing war, and it will fall to the residents of the Glass House: Michael, Eve, Shane and Claire, to take the fight to an enemy who threatens to destroy the town, forever.
Lovers of Morganville, rejoice: Black Dawn takes the intrigue, romance and nail-biting suspense of the series to its highest level yet!
I almost can’t believe how much I still love the Morganville Vampire series even after 12 books. In Last Breath (and even somewhat now) I wasn’t sure about the draug. In theory the idea of the draug sounds a little lame to me, but in practice I was really into the story and couldn’t stop reading until I knew how it would end. I think that’s the power of the characters and the relationships in this series. No matter what the plot complication the real thrill is how everyone will react both to the disaster and to each other. There is so much tension and subplot between so many of the characters that it can be mesmerising to watch it all play out, especially now that we get multiple POVs in each book. I can’t even go into the the relationships here, you need to read all the books from the start to understand how complicated it is. It’s really a soap opera.
Black Dawn concludes the draug storyline that started in Last Breath and things continue to get really bad. Bishop seemed like the worst thing that could happen to Morganville, but Magnus and the Draug were definitely worse. As with most Morganville books things get really bad until everything collapses into terrible and you’re really just on the edge of your seat waiting to see who’ll come out alive (or undead as the case may be) in the end. There are a lot of major characters that have become important to life in Morganville but who I don’t think Rachel Caine would hesitate to take out as part of the larger story (some she has in the past and some in this book).
It’s hard review a Morganville book without spoilers. The most spoiler-free plot I can manage is that things still going very badly in the war with the draug. Amelie is out of play after being attacked by Magnus in Last Breath so Oliver is running the show (always high tension). Myrnin is still his lovably hateable manic unpredictable self and Claire, Shane, Michael and Eve are stuck in the middle trying to come out alive at the end. Morganville is always dark and dangerous and as we see at the end of Black Dawn, it will always be that way.
Once again the Morganville Vampire series has kept me hooked with it's fast action and great characters. I have no idea how this series will end and I love that about it.
If you've never read this series I'd recommend starting from the beginning. The characters change and grow and new ones have been added over time so it's worth reading this series in order to really understand the character dynamics.
Overall, another solid addition to the crazy fun that is Morganville.
